2007 Formula One Series Championship: Bridgestone Teams, Single Tyre Formula And Sole Supplier

Published: June 19, 2007
What if tyres were taken out of the racing equation for the 2007 Formula One Series Championship? For one, those who lose a race could no longer blame the tyres, especially if all cars are racing on the same skins. Whether it sounds like a dream come true or a nightmare, it's actually a reality.
The FIA Formula One has announced that there will be a single tyre formula for the 2007 Formula One Series Championship season.
What that formula means is that Bridgestone will be the sole tyre supplier to the 2007 Formula One Series Championship up through 2010. Bridgestone was awarded the contract after Michelin backed out of Formula One after the 2006 season. The FIA, the governing organization of motor sports, along with many teams pressed for the transition to a single tyre formula as a cost saving technique.
All teams participating in the 2007 Formula One Series Championship recognized that a single tyre supplier would be less expensive and impartial, with everyone on the same basis. "There would also be a very important safety aspect in that with a single tyre we would be able to control the degree of grip and therefore preventing excessive cornering speeds," said Max Mosley from the FIA.
There are eleven teams in the 2007 Formula One Series Championship: McLaren, Ferrari, BMW Sauber, Renault, Williams, Toyota, Red Bull, Super Aguri, Toro Rosso, Honda, and Spyker. Each team has two drivers to their team car, along with at least one or more test drivers. The ironic thing about Formula One is that not a single team has a base in the United States yet the U.S. holds Formula One Series Championship races each year within its borders. All of the teams participating in the 2007 Formula One Series Championship are based either in the United Kingdom or other areas throughout Europe.
Every car that participates this year in the 2007 Formula One Series Championship will be driving on Bridgestone skins. However, for some of these teams, this isn't the first year that they have been on the same page as each other. In the 2006 series, there were only five Bridgestone teams: Ferrari, Toyota, Williams, Spyker, and Super Aguri.
There has been speculation as to why Ferrari came out on top at the most recent test, but Bridgestone claimed that the 2007 Formula One Series Championship tyre is a different build from earlier years. This claim was used to ensure that the teams who used Bridgestone tyres last year would not have an advantage over other teams in the 2007 Formula One Series Championship.
Each car participating in the 2007 Formula One Series Championship will be racing on Bridgestone Potenza tires. There are significant differences between normal tyres and racing tyres. According to Formula One's official website, Ordinary car tyres are made with heavy steel radials and are designed for durability and distance. Formula One tyres are made to be light like the rest of the car. While the life of a normal tyre normally last 16,000 kilometers or more, Formula One tyres last no more than 200 kilometers.
Another rule change that will go into effect during the 2007 Formula One Series Championship is that the supply of tyres has been altered to meet the revisions made to the Sports Regulations. For the 2007 Formula One Series Championship season, each driver receives 14 sets of dry weather tyres for the races, which take place on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There are two separate compounds to racing tyres, soft and hard. A new rule states that each compound will have to be used during the 2007 Formula One Series Championship races at least once.
The 2007 Formula One Series Championship hits the United States on June 17, 2007. With every car using tyres provided by a sole tyre supplier, there will more room for skill to prevail over equipment. The 2007 Formula One Series Championship is the perfect place to see hardcore drivers taking their skills to the extreme, so don't forget to buckle up.
